The Annual AHRI Network Conference for 2023 will be hosted by Pedro Aruppe Human Rights Institute, The University of Deusto.
The conference will take place September 7-9, 2023. The theme of the conference will be ” Human Rights Defenders Under Seige.”
The call for papers invites scholars, human rights defenders, and institutional representatives to contribute to reflect on the topics by submitting an abstract on one of the 4 thematic panels.
The deadline to submit an abstract is 21 April, 2023. Successful applicants are expected to submit a paper from 4000-6000 words.

On 28 February, FRA’s Director presented the updated report on surveillance by intelligence services to the European Parliament’s Committee of Inquiry to investigate the use of Pegasus and equivalent surveillance spyware (PEGA).

On 22 February the European Excellence Exchange in Journalism project and the Permanent Conference of Mediterranean Audiovisual Operators invited FRA to present two new courses of its eMedia Toolkit on migration.

On 21 March, FRA is hosting a Hybrid panel debate on “Applying the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights at national level: issues, potential, synergies from the perspective of NHRIs”. In the afternoon a “Hybrid Exchange on the use of the EU Charter in judicial proceedings” will see the interventions of a judge at the Croatian Constitutional Court and a member of the Commission for Human Rights of The Netherlands (in case of interest of participating in these events: Gabriel.Toggenburg@fra.europa.eu)

Workshop on REFORM of the UN Minority Rghts Regime
Deadline: 31 March, 2023
The Minority Rights Solidarity Network in conjunction with the Sussex Centre for Human Rights Research invites abstracts for a workshop to be held on 11 May 2023 at the University of Sussex on the topic of REFORM of the UN minority rights regime.
On the 30th anniversary year of the UN Declaration on Minorities, this is a pertinent time to undertake a stocktaking exercise of the current UN framework for the protection of minorities and explore whether now is the time to pursue the adoption of a treaty for the protection of minorities or whether other options for reform can serve the same purpose. Significantly, the option of a UN treaty has been put back on the table by the current UN Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues.

Research Seminar on the Council of Europe Human Rights Day

The Institute for Human Rights at Åbo Akademi University welcomes you to a research seminar on civil participation in local decision-making!
A day dedicated to human rights will be organised in Turku on 4 May 2023. The day focuses on the effect of Council of Europe human rights standards on human rights at the local level. As part of this day, the Institute for Human Rights at Åbo Akademi University arranges a research seminar on civil participation in local decision-making, in particular on the issues affecting fundamental and human rights. The seminar will explore other forms of participation than election-related participation from both a theoretical and practical perspective, with examples from a European human rights city and the Finnish context. It will be held in English and attendance is possible either in situ or remotely via zoom.

International Human Rights Law: An Introduction Course
The Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM) will run its annual Summer School, International Human Rights Law: An Introduction, from 3 July to 7 July 2023 inclusive. The Summer School provides participants with an in-depth introduction into law and practices relating to: civil and political rights, economic and social rights, armed conflict, and regional human rights systems. The course is taught by experts based at SIM, Utrecht University, through lectures, interactive working groups, a moot, and excursion. It is attended annually by professionals and students from across the global, with an interest in gaining expertise in human rights law. Policy Summer School on “Diversity Governance and Securitization in the EU and Beyond

The Policy Summer School “Diversity Governance and Securitization in the EU and Beyond” is an intensive program organized by the Institute for Minority Rights of Eurac Research, in cooperation with the Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals and the University of Glasgow. It is part of the activities of the network SECUREU (The Securitization of Migrants and Ethnic Minorities and the Rise of Xenophobia in the EU). SECUREU is a Jean Monnet Network funded by the Erasmus + Program.
The Summer School provides participants with the unique opportunity to expand their understanding of processes of securitization of ethnic and national minorities and migration and the challenges of addressing such processes in increasingly diverse societies.
What: One-week interdisciplinary program combining lectures, roundtable discussions, role-play, and study visits
When: 2-8 July 2023
Where: Institute for Minority Rights - Eurac Research, Bozen/Bolzano, Italy (see map)
Who: Postgraduate students (in Political Science, Law, Sociology, History, International Relations, Anthropology and other related fields), civil servants, NGO representatives, journalists and other practitioners
Tuition Fee: The tuition fee is covered by the SECUREU network and the Institute for Minority Rights of Eurac Research.
Scholarship: A limited number of scholarships are available covering travel (up to 350€) and accommodation in Bozen/Bolzano, provided by the SECUREU network. Priority for scholarship will be given to applicants affiliated with partners of the SECUREU network: Institut Barcelona d’Estudis Internacionals (Spain); University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands); University of Glasgow (United Kingdom); Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe – Institute of the Leibniz Association (Germany); Koç University (Turkey); Eurac Research (Italy).

"Comparative Law Review" vol. 29 (2023) - CfP
Deadline: 1 April, 2023
"Comparative Law Review" is inviting submissions for its next volume (29), which will be published in December 2023. The deadline for submissions for CLR vol. 29 is 1st of April 2023.
CLR (ISSN 0866-9449, e-ISSN 2391-7644) is a gold open access, peer-reviewed and refereed international journal published by the Faculty of Law and Administration at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (Poland). CLR is the fist Polish legal journals indexed Scopus.
The scope of "CLR” includes both private and public law, with particular focus on comparative studies. The Editors encourage authors to submit articles and shorter notes that are interdisciplinary in nature and/or analyse a legal problem from a comparative perspective. We particularly welcome proposals elaborating on how the comparative method is applied in domestic and international law-making and jurisprudence. Consequently, we invite original contributions on public international law and EU law. We warmly welcome contributions form AHRI network affiliated researchers.

Workshop: Research Methods in Fundamental Rights

The Centre for Fundamental Rights at the Hertie School is pleased to announce its Fourth Annual Workshop on Research Methods in Fundamental Rights, taking place from 7-9 June 2023 at the Hertie School, Berlin, Germany and online. The workshop is hosted by the Hertie School as a member of CIVICA - The European University of Social Sciences.
The workshop aims to provide doctoral and early-career legal researchers with an opportunity to reflect on diverse research methods in human rights research. Over three days, successful candidates will attend master classes with renowned faculty, who will provide guidance and reflections on the methods they have applied in key pieces of their own research. Participants will have assigned readings that they prepare in advance and will receive video recorded presentations by the faculty for each class. In additional sessions, participants will submit reflections on their own research questions and methods, and will receive individual feedback on their projects from the faculty and fellow participants.
We encourage applications from PhD and early-career legal researchers carrying out fundamental rights research employing any of the methodological approaches covered in the workshop.
The workshop will take place from 7 - 9 June 2023 at the Hertie School and online.
