Welcome to the March edition of our Newsletter. Among the other opportunities listed below we hope you would consider sending in abstracts and proposals to be considered for the AHRI 2022 conference. Feature: AHRI Conference 2022

The Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, will host the AHRI 2022 conference at its Future Africa campus on 2-3 September 2022, preceded by a doctoral/early researcher workshop on 1 September. The theme of the conference will be technology and human rights with panels on the following themes:

 

Track 1: Surveillance and vulnerability

Track 2 Survival and sustainability

Track 3: Democratic participation and accountability 

Abstracts and panel proposals should be submitted to the organisers by 31 March 2022.

 

The conference will be presented in hybrid format with the possibility of presenting papers in person or online.

In light of the Russian aggression towards Ukraine, AHRI has put out a statement condeming Russia's actions and annnoucing its support of Ukraine. 

We support our collegues and students who are affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. You can read the statement here, and other translations on our website, here.

A new webpage “Supporting Ukraine” has been published as the Helena Kennedy Centre response to Russian invasion of Ukraine. There is information on how we can support Ukraine and displaced Ukrainians including resouerces for staff and students, fundraising events and other orginizations to donate to.

Professor Patricia Hynes awarded a Fellowship by the Academy of Social Sciences

Our colleague Professor Patricia Hynes has been awarded a Fellowship by the Academy of Social Sciences. Professor Hynes is one of 47 leading social scientists who have received the award for the excellence and impact of their work and their wider contributions to the social sciences for public benefit.

International Women’s Day 2022

To mark International Women’s Day 2022, we are calling for greater transparency and greater accountability in the role of State institutions ending violence and discrimination against women and girls.

The February issue 39(3) of the Nordic Journal of Human Rights is out! Articles ranging from Human Rights During the Pandemic to Limitations to Constitutional Rights in Botswana. Read the issue here.

In search of protection, justice and the truth: journalists’ responses to impunity in Mexico and Honduras

New research from Dr Tamsin Mitchell at the Centre for Applied Human Rights, University of York, explores journalists’ responses to escalating violence in Mexico and Honduras. Based on interviews with journalist-human rights defenders and protection actors, this paper details the strategies journalists use to seek justice and protection.

Call for papers: Conference on Human Rights and Sustainability as an Emerging and Justiciable Concept

The Research Group on Human Rights and Sustainable Development hosted by the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights is organising a conference from 9-10 June 2022 in Oslo and online, with the topic The Intersection between Human Rights and Sustainability as an Emerging and Justiciable Concept.

We want to extend an invitation to all AHRI Members with an interest in this topic to submit an abstract by 25 March 2022. Please find more information here:

"Cancel culture”, iconoclastic movements and cultural heritage: A minority rights perspective. Marie Sklodowska-Curie Week 

Eurac Research organizes the MSC Week to offer postdoctoral researchers from across the globe the opportunity to work together with Eurac Research on their applications for the MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship. During the MSC Week, researchers develop their fellowship proposal together with senior researchers from Eurac Research, learn from current MSCA Fellows in Eurac Research, and are trained by MSCA experts and an MSCA evaluator on the dos-and-don'ts of the MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship proposal.

After the MSC Week, the trainers accompany the researchers through the writing and fine-tuning of their fellowship proposals until the submission deadline. 

The selected candidate will have a background in law, anthropology, history, sociology, and/or political science. 

The programme is open to PhD-degree holders who want to apply for the Postdoctoral Fellowship with Eurac Research as a Host. To be eligible for MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship, a researcher must hold a PhD degree, have maximum 8 years of research experience, and comply with the “mobility rule” (as defined in the Work Programme).

Sheffield Hallam University offers three Sanctuary Scholarships per academic year to support talented students who have sought asylum in the UK. One of them is the Helena Kennedy Centre Sanctuary Scholarship for MA or LLM Applied Human Rights course.

The GREAT Scholarship for Justice and Law

Deadline: May 31, 2022

The GREAT Scholarships for justice and law are jointly funded by Sheffield Hallam University with the UK government’s GREAT Britain campaign and the British Council. They are exclusively for students domiciled in Nigeria and India, starting one of the following full-time postgraduate taught courses in September 2022. The scholarship provides a £10,000 tuition fee waiver for the first year of study on one of the following courses: 

- MA Applied Human Rights
- LLM Applied Human Rights
- MSc Criminology and Criminal Justice
- LLM Legal Professional Practice
