The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR) is Austria’s largest research institute specialising in human rights. As a non-profit organisation affiliated with the University of Vienna and committed to an interdisciplinary and translational approach, it conducts national and international research on a variety of human rights issues, including the interaction between climate change and migration movements, the rights of people with mental disabilities in the criminal justice system, or the rule of law in the EU enlargement region. |

The research areas are divided into seven Programme Lines. The LBI-GMR as an independent, non-university research institute that was founded in 1992 as an institute of the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft. The institute currently consists of 30 employees from various disciplines and also hosts interns and guest researchers. Since 2019 the Institute is headed by Michael Lysander Fremuth as its Scientific Director and Patricia Mussi-Mailer as its Administrative Director. |

The Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, will host the AHRI 2022 conference at its Future Africa campus on 2-3 September 2022, preceded by a doctoral/early researcher workshop on 1 September. The theme of the conference will be technology and human rights with panels on the following themes:

Track 3: Democratic participation and accountability
The conference will be presented in hybrid format with the possibility of presenting papers in person or online.

News
The Role of Art in Keeping Civic Space Open
The HRD Hub at the Centre for Applied Human Rights, University of York, recently published the first paper in a new series of working papers based on conversations that have taken place between artists, activists and academics as part of the Arctivism project. These conversations aim to explore in more detail the creative practices of collaborations between artists and activists and to better understand the role of art in activism. The paper is based on the first conversation in the series – The Role of Art in Keeping Civic Space Open – which considered how artists and activists in South Africa, Uganda and the Philippines reacted to restrictions imposed during the pandemic and pushed back against closing civic and political spaces.

- 6 April: FRA ran a webinar on the European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) and how civil society organisations can make use of it. Recordings available under the Fundamental Rights Platform library.
- 28 March: FRA Director addressed Human Dimension Meeting on the human rights impact of the war in Ukraine
- 28 March: FRA gave input on business and human rights in a Council of Europe workshop drawing from its access to remedies report.
- 10 March: FRA, in cooperation with the National Roma Contact Points presented preliminary results from its FRA’s Roma survey 2020.
- 24 February: FRA Director spoke at the UN-EU high-level policy dialogue on protecting the safety of journalists, media freedom and pluralism in the European Union. He presented the results of the Agency’s 2019 Fundamental Rights Survey related to media freedom: on average 75% of people in Europe think that free media is important, but the figure is much lower in some countries.

The Human Rights Department (Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń) and Poznań Human Rights Centre (Institute of Law Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences) are pleased to invite you to a 7th lecture of a Lecture series "Contemporary issues of human rights theory and practice. Global, regional and national perspectives”. The Lecture series is organized in association with AHRI.
Guest lecture will be delivered by Dr. Elaine Webster (Strathclyde Law School in Glasgow, Scotland, Director of the Centre for the Study of Human Rights Law) who will be presenting a topic "The prohibition of degrading treatment in human rights law: From interpretation to implementation across international and local scales".

International Humanitarian Law Summer School
The University of Ottawa and the Canadian Red Cross are organizing their 2022 Summer School on International Humanitarian Law (IHL). The goal of this course is to offer students and professionals the fundamentals of IHL and the opportunity to apply this knowledge through realistic case studies and a full simulation day.
The course is offered in English and French and enrolment is limited to 30 participants by language group. Sessions will take place between May 29th and June 3rd in Ottawa, Canada.

Summer School ‘Human Rights & Persons Deprived of Liberty’
The Programme for Studies on Human Rights in Context, Human Rights Centre, Ghent University, and the Global Campus on Human Rights are pleased to invite highly motivated undergraduate students that are achieving their degrees in law, political sciences, public health, criminology, or postgraduate students (masters, LLM, PhD or postdoc) as well as staff of civil society organisations and policymakers to the 1st edition of the Summer School ‘Human Rights & Persons Deprived of Liberty'.
This summer course will be held on the Zoom platform from the 5th to the 8th of July 2022.
Curated by Prof Dr Clara Burbano-Herrera (Ghent University) and Prof Dr Manfred Nowak (University of Vienna), this course is a great opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of the structural problems around prisons through the lens of international human rights law, public health, criminal law, and practice.
Participants will have the opportunity to interact with world-leading academics from Europe, Africa and North & South America working in this field, gaining awareness of complex issues related to the human rights of persons deprived of liberty.

The GREAT Scholarship for Justice and Law

The GREAT Scholarships for justice and law are jointly funded by Sheffield Hallam University with the UK government’s GREAT Britain campaign and the British Council. They are exclusively for students domiciled in Nigeria and India, starting one of the following full-time postgraduate taught courses in September 2022. The scholarship provides a £10,000 tuition fee waiver for the first year of study on one of the following courses:
