AHRI Announces Collaboration with the Graphix Project
The mission of the Graphix Project (GP) is to collaborate to develop open sourced, multi-lingual human rights education materials available free to activists and partners world-wide in 2023. GP is developing an interactive online platform and a graphic history of human rights book.
Through a partnership agreement, AHRI has committed to assisting GP’s human rights research and advocacy by sharing opportunities to get involved with the project amongst the AHRI Network.
The GP invites AHRI member institutes and affiliated researchers to:
- Act as project advisors, informing final project design and implementation
- Contribute to data gathering over the next 6 months, as interviewers or interviewee
Contribute to effective implementation by disseminating the Project findings/outputs
- Work with the GP team to explore scope for the project outputs (including interactive online platform) to be integrated in their educational curricula

They organise engaging intellectual events of both global and local importance relating to human rights law, including lectures, conversations, discussions, conferences and symposia, both in Oxford and elsewhere.

Nordic Journal of Human Rights celebrates its 40-year anniversary this November!
To mark the occasion the Journal has issued a celebratory special issue on "The Future of Human Rights". The issue connects the 40-year legacy of the journal with the challenges and opportunities for human rights in the future and covers a wide variety of thematic issues and geographic contexts. It contains 13 scientific articles, 3 book reviews and an editorial.

First Conference about Academic Freedom in the America
The First Regional Conference on Academic Freedom in the Americas, organized by the Coalition for Academic Freedom in the Americas (CAFA), will take place on November 10-11 in Monterrey, Mexico. This is a joint initiative from Scholars at Risk, the Universidad de Monterrey and the Human Rights Research and Education Centre (HRREC) at the University of Ottawa. The program entails discussions on academic freedom concerns in the region and an assessment of available tools to address them, including an analysis of how the IACHR’s Inter-American Principles on Academic Freedom and University Autonomy can be used to create further protections for academic freedom. Participants will also be able to attend the launch of the Free to Think Report 2022 which reflects the work of several partners (including HRREC) to document attacks on the global higher education sector and offers analysis of several key country situations. HAKI Journal of Human Rights is an annual peer-reviewed academic journal that seeks to provide researchers, scholars and human rights practitioners with a platform for engaging in human rights theory, practice and advocacy.
The journal’s general aim is to broaden the study and practice of human rights by fostering a critical re-examination of existing approaches from an Afrocentric perspective through discussions on themes on the universal theory and practice of human rights.The Journal invites analytically rigorous papers, articles, comments on cases, legislation, policies and book reviews pertaining to various themes in Human Rights in Kenya.

New Publication
Creating Stable Futures: Human Trafficking, Participation and Outcomes for Children
October 2022
Led by Professor Patricia Hynes, Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice, a new report has been published on the trafficking of children. The report summarises the main findings from a 12-month participatory research study which focuses on the experiences of young victims of modern slavery subject to immigration control. In the report titled "CREATING STABLE FUTURES: Human Trafficking, Participation and Outcomes for Children", young victims of modern slavery have shared their experiences following identification of human trafficking through the UK immigration and social care system.
The young participants have identified what they would need to see for positive and meaningful change to happen in their lives and have helped to develop a Positive Outcomes Framework to be used by practitioners and policymakers.
Professor Hynes said: “This is the first time young people have identified what they need to see for positive and meaningful change to happen in their lives. Children and young people have rights – rights to be heard, participate and be able to develop their lives and contribute to society.”

Then join us for our Next Generation Networking Event and learn about the realization of human rights at the local level with particular focus on public administration.
The online networking event, taking place in the framework of the 2023 Academy and Conference: Human Rights Go Local - What works, seeks to establish a link between today's stakeholders and tomorrow's actors: Exchange practical knowledge of working in the broad field of human rights, discuss the realization of future perspectives and aspirations, and gain insights into professionalization opportunities in human rights at the local level - a sphere gaining ever-more importance in the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals and the international human rights agenda!

Thinking of a Master's in Human Rights? The University of Manitoba Master of Human Rights (MHR) program is the first interdisciplinary Masters degree of its kind in Canada and prepares students for careers in human rights. The program is a collaboration of the faculties of Arts, Law, Education, and Social Work. It also cooperates with the Centre for Human Rights Research, the Arthur V. Mauro Institute for Peace and Justice, and the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.
The application deadline for the 2023 academic year is December 1st 2022. We are hosting an online information session on Tuesday November 15th from 10:00 - 11:00am to introduce the MHR program and answer any questions you may have. Unable to make the online session? The main goal of the LL.M. in Human Rights program (1-year, full time) is to provide theoretical and practical training for future scholars and professionals in human rights, with special emphasis on the legal aspects of human rights protection. Our highly qualified and diverse faculty prepares students to engage in comparative and inter-disciplinary analysis of complex human rights problems. The program offers practical instruction in the specific legal mechanisms and institutional processes which may be used by national human rights organizations to effectively approach human rights issues that transitional and also established democracies confront.
The MA in Human Rights Program (1-year, full time) combines social science, policy-based approach with legal science and it aims to provide theoretical and practical training in human rights for students who do not have a legal background. The problem-focused curriculum and the strong interdisciplinary and comparative approach offer students ample opportunities to understand the theoretical and legal foundations of human rights and engage with the challenges of human rights protection in the age of skepticism and populism.
The LLM and the MA Programs in Human Rights are committed to research-based teaching.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the UKRI GCRF One Ocean Hub, a 5-year research for development programme which seeks to address intractable challenges faced by developing countries in relation to ocean management.
Led by the University of Strathclyde the Hub’s research focuses on the specific challenges of South Africa, Namibia and Ghana, in realising the economic, socio-cultural and environmental benefits from the ocean. The Hub weaves learning from the ocean, ranging from the traditional knowledge of the peoples who rely upon it to marine sciences, innovative legal approaches and artistic methods. Our aim is to bridge the disconnections in law, science and society across all levels from the local to the international. We aim to empower vulnerable communities, woman and youth to shape and benefit from the blue economy through inclusive and integrated governance approaches required to ensure a healthy ocean and flourishing economies.
As a Research Associate, you will develop research objectives and conduct individual and/or collaborative research in international environmental and/or human rights law, as part of the One Ocean Hub team, working under the general supervision of the Hub Director and senior colleagues.

New FRA survey to capture the experiences of people fleeing the war in Ukraine
Call for Survey Response
Experiences and Views of Ukrainian Refugees
“As war in Ukraine continues, EU countries are welcoming and supporting unprecedented numbers of people seeking safety in the EU,” says FRA Director Michael O’Flaherty. “This poses a wide variety of fundamental rights challenges now and potentially later. With this survey, FRA seeks to assist the EU and affected countries to find sustainable solutions that will benefit host countries and the people who fled this tragic war.”
The online survey will capture the experiences and views of all adults and their children who left Ukraine to come to the EU to escape the war. The questions cover issues related to work, education, housing and healthcare. The survey also includes questions about language learning, integration, as well as experiences of discrimination and racism.
The survey runs in Bulgaria, Czechia, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Spain. It closes in September.
People fleeing from the war in Ukraine can fill in the survey in English, Ukrainian or Russian.
The survey is part of a range of FRA activities looking into the war’s fundamental rights implications in the EU.

The Universal Periodic Review and the UN Human Rights System: Raising the Bar on Accountability
14-18 November, 2022
The emergence of the United Nations (UN) Universal Periodic Review (UPR) has brought new life into the measures taken at the international and national levels to hold states accountable to their international human rights and humanitarian law obligations.
This training course – co-organized with UPR-Info – will explore the origin and evolution of the UPR and its functioning in Geneva. It will largely focus on the nature of implementation of the UPR recommendations at the national level. Using examples (including anecdotes from the experience of the lecturers) of different stages of implementation the course will provide hands-on exercises to demonstrate the new pathways the UPR is evolving for the realization of human rights.
